Suf Amichay

Dr. Suf Amichay is a research fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. She works on medieval natural philosophy and metaphysics in Hebrew, Arabic and Latin. Her PhD dissertation was on metaphysical commitments and the genealogy of pre-modern arguments for the existence of God. She is currently interested in concepts of ground and concepts of matter.

 

Abstract: The concept of Ground (non-causal metaphysical relationship) has been gaining popularity in recent years. In the research I hope to complete at Notre Dame, I explore the role of the Active Intellect as Ground for Avicenna. I will argue that for Avicenna the Active Intellect serves as Ground both metaphysically (as the order of essences), and physically (as the giver of forms).
