Marco Rainini is Professor of Church History at the l’Univesità Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where he teaches on the Milan and Brescia campuses. His research is mainly focussed on the 12th and 13th centuries. In particular, he deals with symbolic theology and apocalypticism - with particular reference to the character and work of Joachim of Fiore - and the origins and early development of the mendicant orders. His publications include the monographs "Disegni dei tempi. Il 'Liber Figurarum' e la teologia figurativa di Gioacchino da Fiore" (Viella-Centro Internazionale di Studi Gioachimiti, Roma 2006); "Corrado di Hirsau e il 'Dialogus de cruce'. Per la ricostruzione del profilo di un autore monastico del XII secolo" (SISMEL, Firenze 2014); "Il profeta del papa. Vita e memoria di Raniero da Ponza eremita di curia" (Vita e Pensiero, Milano 2016). He has edited several volumes, including "L’Ordine dei Predicatori. I Domenicani: storia, figure e istituzioni (1216-2016)" (with G. Festa, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2016) and "Ordinare il mondo. Diagrammi e simboli nelle pergamene di Vercelli" with T. Leonardi (Vita e Pensiero, Milano 2018).

Prof. Rainini is visiting Notre Dame as a guest scholar of the Department of Classics and thanks to the support of Classics, the Center of Italian Studies, the Medieval Institute and the History of Philosophy Forum. While at Notre Dame, Prof. Rainini is working on the critical edition of Joachim of Fiore.
