Project Title: Cynicism and Roman Philosophy: A Reevaluation

Affiliation: Neuchâtel University (Switzerland)

Host: Gretchen Reydams-Schils

Jordi Pià-Comella is Professor of Classics at Neuchâtel University, in Switzerland. He works on Roman literature and philosophy, more precisely on Stoicism (Une piété de la raison. Philosophie et religion dans le stoïcisme impérial tardif, Brepols, 2014) and on the Latin reception of Cynicism, from Lucilius to Seneca.

While scholars usually claim that Cynicism experiences a decline during the Roman Republic, the aim of this project is to show for the first time that, on the contrary, Cynicism plays an important role in Roman philosophy but in a very specific way. In Rome, Cynicism is not simply perceived as a monolithic philosophy but as a way of life that can be associated with other Roman values and the other philosophies.
