Project Title: Later-Medieval Theories of Definition

I am a postdoctoral fellow (Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) at the History of Philosophy Forum and the John J. Reilly Center. My current project concerns the fourteenth-century debate about definitions and essences and its consequences for natural philosophy, especially regarding the role of matter in physical definitions. More broadly, I am interested in the relationship between theories of science and scientific practices in the Middle Ages and beyond. In my PhD project at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin), I studied Albert the Great's theory of subject matters (subiecta scientiae), the application of that theory to zoology (scientia de animalibus), and some of its epistemological consequences.
