Andrew Chignell

Bio: Born in Scotland and raised in the Chicago area, Andrew Chignell taught in the Philosophy departments at Cornell and Penn before moving to Princeton’s University Center for Human Values in 2018. He specializes in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, early modern philosophy, moral psychology, and some aspects of aesthetics, epistemology, and food ethics.

Abstract: Kant developed a sophisticated but understudied account of the rational norms on various kinds of assent (Fuerwahrhalten – literally, holding-for-true). My goals in this project are to lay out those norms and the kinds of propositional attitudes involved, provide an account of the ultimate source of those norms, and show how this part of Kant’s philosophy relates to his more famous efforts in epistemology, ethics, and the philosophy of religion.
