Title: "Intellect and Passive Intellect: Themistius as a source for Averroes"

Abstract: Our starting point will be Themistius’ exegesis of one of the most difficult passages in Aristotle’s De Anima: Chapter 5 of the 3rd book. Our first task will be to shed light on Themistius’ interpretation and its sources. Then we will move to Averroes’ reactions to it.
We will read and comment upon a selection of passages of Themistius’s paraphrase of the De Anima (Books I 3-4, and III 5), and of Averroes’ Long commentary on the De Anima (Book III, C.5 and C.20).
